1st Grade Complementary Leaves

Upon creating these colorful leaf paintings, the 1st grade students studied artwork created by the famous contemporary artist, Andy Warhol. The students were inspired by the bright palette and repeated images which Warhol commonly thread throughout many of his prints.


To begin these works, the students made stencils to create repeated images and later contrived a color scheme consisting of pairs of complementary colors to attain bold contrast. When painting their work, the 1st graders experimented with mixing different colors to create their own unique masterpieces. They ultimately finished their work by adding wonderful linear details using oil pastels.
