These wonderful creations were made by the 7th graders. They used scratchboard, wire, cardboard and other found objects to create these whimsical creatures.

Welcome to OWS Art

Welcome back to the Art Room! I am extremely excited to be teaching my sixth year at Open Window School. As the year unfolds, I will be diving into an array of different visual art projects, introducing our K-8 students to artists, art movements, and styles from around the world. Our Art Explorers will learn new techniques and finetune their aesthetic understandings using different mediums including graphite, charcoal, pastel, paint, ceramics, mono and block prints, collage, metal work, sewing and much more. Check in with this art blog to see what our talented young artists are up to!

Concentric Circles

Robert Delaunay Circular Forms 1930

The first grade students created these abstract works of art which were inspired by Robert Delaunay's non-objective, geometric paintings. Not only did the young students hone in on their drawing and tracing skills, but they practiced hand mixing original colors to create an array of warm and cool hues which they juxtaposed in their compositions.

Art Walk

You are invited to see Ms. Leggitt’s artwork on display at the Woodland Park Presbyterian Church located at 225 N 70th St in Seattle. Her drawings and paintings will be showcased in the Phinney Art and Music Series paired with a performance by the Seattle University Chamber Choir on Sunday, May 6th at 4pm. Her work will also be part of the 17th Annual PhinneyWood Art Walk, taking place at the same location from 6-9pm on May 11th and noon-5pm on May 12th. Hope to see you there!

Third Grade Pinch Pot Monsters

The third graders made these expressive monsters out of clay using the pinch pot method.

Fifth Grade Stencils!

Inspired by Seattle artist Greg Boudreaux’s photo booth themed black and white portraits, the fifth grade students made these intriguing portraits using a complex stencil technique. After the students chose which photos they wanted to render, each student used an x-acto knife to carefully cut out the layers which had been composed in Adobe Photoshop. Once the students were finished cutting all fifty layers for this project, Ms. Leggitt carefully lined them up and used spray paint to make the images come to life!

Bird Bowls and Plates

The eighth grade students had a wonderful time glazing these ceramic pieces and carefully applying a black topcoat to create these intricate designs which were inspired by traditional Mehndi patterns from India!
