Third Grade Picasso Portraits

These wonderful collages created by Ms. Gerke's class were based off of Pablo Picasso's cubist portraits. The third graders mastered collage techniques, when they constructed their artwork using only construction paper and magazine scraps. Please stop by the OWS library to see the entire third grade collection on display!

Spooky Silhouettes

2nd grade students became familiar with collage and watercolor techniques by creating a mixed media masterpiece of a Spooky House at sunset. The class began by making comparisons between Ellsworth Kelley's "Spectrum" and the sky at sunset, talking about analogous and transition colors. They created their backgrounds using wet-on-wet watercolor techniques and salt application, using analogous colors to create a scale reminiscent of Kelley's work. When these were dry, they cut out silhouettes of images that they associated with Halloween.
Well done!

Third Grade Ink Grid Drawings

Utilizing contemporary painter Chuck Close's grid techniques, the third graders created these ink drawings using quills, Sumi pens, India Ink and brushes, as well as fine tip felt pens. In doing these, they displayed a wonderful understanding of how to attain a wide range of value using different pen and ink techniques. I feel that the many hours the students put into these drawings paid off extremely well. Nice work!
