2nd Grade City Scapes

2nd grade students became familiar with collage and watercolor techniques by creating a mixed media image of a city silhouette at sunset. The class began by making comparisons between Ellsworth Kelley's "Spectrum" and the sky at sunset, talking about analogous and transition colors. The students then collaborated with partners and applied problem solving to successfully use one line to cut a large sheet of black paper into two cityscape silhouettes. They created their backgrounds using wet-on-wet watercolor techniques and salt application, using analogous colors to create a scale reminiscent of Kelley's work. Lastly, they added fine details to their cities and skies using metallic acrylic paint.
