Architectual Invention

When a small group of first graders had completed their class project early, instead of simply free drawing, I introduced them to the world of architectural design through block building. Very quickly the students became immersed in stacking and balancing blocks, just as Frank Lloyd Wright had cantilevered steel beams and concrete slabs. Upon completing their complex structures, the student's created beautiful observational drawings, unconsciously discovering the world of perspective. This project was a wonderful way for the students to discover a connection between sculpture and 2D art, as well as to find ownership of their drawings by constructing their own still life.
